AG Letitia James plans to go after Trump's cash and property if he doesn't pay his civil fraud debt. Is the ball in Letitia James' court? "The burden is on Letitia James to find Trump's assets" and decide what she wants garnished or auctioned, he said. D'Orazio predicts James would first target the cash that Trump and the Trump Organization keep in New York-registered bank accounts. He would then remit $95 million to the Attorney General's Office, and that would go toward paying Trump's judgment.

Ten days ago, Chubb underwrote Trump's $92 million bond for his E. Jean Carroll defamation appeal. But Chubb declined to handle the far higher appeal bond Trump now needs in his NY civil fraud case. The insurance giant had faced blowback after agreeing to the Carroll bond. Chubb's "no, thanks" comes just five days after the company's CEO, Evan Greenberg, sent a letter to brokers, clients, and investors addressing widespread criticism over the Carroll bond. The Carroll bond was underwritten by Chubb subsidiary Federal Insurance Company.

The CEO of the Chubb insurance company on Wednesday defended providing former President Donald Trump with a $91.6 million appeal bond in the civil case where he was found liable for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of rape. "When Chubb issues an appeal bond, it isn't making judgments about the claims, even when the claims involve alleged reprehensible conduct," Greenberg wrote in the letter, which was obtained by CNBC. "It would be wrong for us to do so and we are in no way supporting the defendant. We are supporting and are part of the justice system plumbing included in this case." Chubb has been under fire since last week when Trump revealed he had obtained the appeal bond from the company.

UNTIL AUGUST, by Gabriel García Márquez. Billed as a “rediscovered” novel, “Until August” is likely to be the last published book of fiction by the Colombian master and Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez. Reading it may provoke unhealthy levels of frustration in those familiar with García Márquez’s most indelible creations. Readers’ inevitable disappointment with “Until August” may be directed partly at García Márquez’s two sons and literary executors, who permitted its publication even though their father had made his wishes clear. And to his sons he said: “Memory is at once my source material and my tool.

Trump must stow $500M cash in a bank to cover the appeal bond for his NY fraud case, experts say. His next appeal bond will cost him far more. By posting another appeal bond. Similar to the more familiar jail bond, an appeal bond is a promise of payment that's backed by collateral, meaning cash or property. The premium on a half-billion-dollar appeal bond could run anywhere from $250,000 to north of one million dollars, just to purchase the bond, experts guestimated.

Reddit disclosed 2023 revenue growth of 20% and said its core business relies on online advertising sales when it filed to go public on Thursday. "This is an AI play," Herb Greenberg, Editor of "Herb Greenberg | On the Street" on Substack, explained on CNBC's Last Call Thursday. "If you go through the prospectus, the first thing you see is the talk that they're using this to train large language models -- and that's true," Greenberg said. Reddit cut a $60 million deal with Google on Thursday for the tech giant to train its AI models on the social network's data. "They talk about the revenue they're going to get from that from licensing that data," Greenberg said.

Apply for financial aidIn ordinary years, high school graduates miss out on billions in federal grants because they don't apply for financial aid. Because this year's award letters are likely to look a lot different, that also opens the door for families to ask for more college aid. In that case, you may be able to appeal to the college financial aid office, according to Menaka Hampole, assistant professor of finance at the Yale School of Management. Alternatively, if the financial aid packages from other, comparable schools were better, that is also worth bringing to the school's attention in an appeal. "It's very important for students and families to know that financial aid offices tend to be very approachable," Greenberg said.

The vast majority — nearly $40 million — went to law firms working on his personal legal problems. But significant portions of their donations went to law firms defending Trump in civil cases involving his real-estate empire and its top executives, including Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump. Only about $861,000 was spent on law firms working exclusively on political issues. Where there were gaps, we contacted law firms and individual lawyers who received money from the PACs. In 2021 and 2022 combined, Trump spent $16 million on legal fees through the Save America PAC.

A lawyer for the chief witness against Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, said on Friday that the witness was cooperating with a House Ethics Committee investigation into whether Mr. Gaetz had sex with an underage girl while he was serving in Congress. Fritz Scheller, a lawyer for Mr. Gaetz’s former friend and political ally Joel Greenberg, said he provided documents to the committee that he said backed up his client’s claims that he witnessed Mr. Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old girl. Greenberg has and will cooperate with any congressional request,” Mr. Scheller said in an email on Friday. Mr. Greenberg, who pleaded guilty in May 2021 to charges including sex trafficking, is serving an 11-year prison sentence. He had previously cooperated with a Justice Department investigation into whether Mr. Gaetz had engaged in sex trafficking of a minor, a federal offense that carries a minimum of 10 years in prison.

For the first time in over a decade, more students are choosing to go to college. Undergraduate enrollment rose 1.2% in the fall of 2023 compared with one year earlier — a gain of roughly 176,000 students, according to the National Student Clearinghouse's latest research. "The number of students in college has finally turned the corner after years of decline," said Doug Shapiro, executive director of the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. "Students have been increasingly opting for shorter term degrees and more vocational programs and vocational certificates," he added — at the expense of a four-year degree. "We have more families asking about pre-professional programs," Greenberg said.

The House Ethics Committee investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz has reached out to the woman whom the congressman allegedly had sexual relations with when she was a 17-year-old minor, according to a source familiar with the committee’s work. The federal probe, which also included allegations he had sex with a minor, concluded in 2023 with no charges brought against the congressman. The increased activity under Republican leadership is notable given the committee probe was started by House Democrats in 2021. But McCarthy has repeatedly denounced those accusations and has said Gaetz worked to oust the former speaker because of the ethics probe. The probe expanded over the years before the Justice Department officially decided last year not to charge the congressman.
